The "Iron Lung"

In 1929, the American engineer Philip Drinker presented the "iron lung" to the public. It was the first long-term ventilator and helped polio patients, in particular, with breathing. In 1947, the Sanitary Commission of the Canton of Bern established the first "iron lung" for the Inselspital.
